    Over 50,000 genocide suspects still at large

    Over 50,000 genocide suspects still at large

    Over 50,000 people suspected of having participated in the 1994 genocide are still at large in various African and European countries, according to the Rwandan Prosecutor General’s office. The Rwandan judicial authorities have only issued arrest warrants for 146 of these suspects but state they are working on the case files of the others.

    Gacaca courts in Rwanda: 18 years after the genocide, is there justice and reconciliation for survivors of sexual violence? In January 2012, several years after we first met the courageous women and man featured in “The Men Who Killed Me”, we re-interviewed fifteen of those survivors of sexual violence to learn how their lives had unfolded since the book’s publication.

    Genocide suspect in The Hague denied temporary release

    Genocide suspect in The Hague denied temporary release

    The District Court in The Hague, Netherlands, has ruled that genocide suspect Yvonne Ntacyobatabara Basebya should remain in custody while investigations in her case are still ongoing. Three judges ruled during a pre-trial hearing that the charges against her (which include murder and rape) “are the gravest in international law,” and that they therefore could not grant her temporary release to celebrate Christmas. The trial is scheduled to start next April.

    Dutch court to consider appeal of Rwandan man

    In 2009, Joseph Mpambara was convicted in the Netherlands of murder and torture during the 1994 genocide. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. A Dutch court is now considering his appeal.

    In memoriam: Immaculée Makumi (1949-2010)

    On 16 November 2010, after four months of hospitalization, Immaculée Makumi passed away at the age of 61. Among the loved ones Immaculée leaves behind is her beloved daughter Claudine. Immaculée had a hard life, having experienced many forms of discrimination. During the Rwandan genocide in 1994 she was raped and infected with HIV as a result.

    Governor General apologizes to Rwandan leaders

    After a visit to the Gisozi Genocide Memorial Centre, a mass grave in the city of Kigali, Rwanda, Governor General Michaëlle Jean apologized to Rwandan leaders for Canada’s “inaction” during the 1994 genocide in the African country.

    Rwandan organization calls for action against killing of genocide survivors

    Ibuka, the main organization of Rwandan genocide survivors, brought the question of survivors’ murders before both houses of the Rwandan parliament. According to Ibuka, twenty-six genocide survivors were murdered in 2009 in Rwanda. Nine women and several children are said to be among the victims.

    Twenty-six genocide survivors murdered in 2009

    The Hirondelle News Agency reports that Ibuka, the umbrella organization of genocide survivors in Rwanda, documented the murder of twenty-six genocide survivors in 2009 in Rwanda. Among those murdered are nine women and several children.
