    Need for a UN Trust Fund for Rwandan Genocide Survivors

    Noam Schimmel calls for the United Nations to create a dedicated voluntary trust fund for survivors of the Rwandan genocide. This trust fund would provide a central address for aid agencies and governments to channel funds to address survivor needs and create programs that specifically address their unique circumstances.

    Submissions on concerns regarding the termination of gacaca

    Survivors Fund, in partnership with Redress and IBUKA, has been working on developing submissions on draft and current legislation that impacts on the rights of survivors. At present, the Rwanda Parliament is debating a new law on the termination of gacaca courts, which is planned for 18th June. As a final decision on this draft law is pending, it is the focus of their first submission.

    A review of Rwanda’s Fund for Genocide Survivors

    In 1998, the government established the Fund for Genocide Survivors (FARG) to channel financial support and otherwise to survivors. Since 1998, the fund has spent over Rwf130 billion on survivors’ welfare with 75 per cent spent on education. It is now conducting an impact assessment study to determine how effective the FARG has been since its establishment.

    Over 100 billion Rwandan francs spent on survivors’ welfare

    Rwanda’s Prime Minister Bernard Makuza announces that, since the establishment of the Fund for Genocide Survivors, the government has spent Rwf 110.8 billion towards the welfare of survivors. The fund was established in 1998 to improve the welfare of genocide survivors by providing them with basic needs including shelter, healthcare, education and guidance towards self-sustainability.

    “One Dollar Campaign” for Rwandan genocide orphans collects $1 million

    The Hirondelle News Agency reports that the “One Dollar Campaign” launched in Rwanda on April 4, 2009 to raise funds to support orphans of the 1994 Rwandan genocide has collected 500 million Rwandan Francs (1 mil. US dollars) to date, according to a report published by the Rwandan daily New Times.
