    Belgian court orders new trial for “genocide banker”

    On 1 March 2010, the Assize Court of Brussels agreed to a new trial for Rwanda’s former Interhamwe leader, Ephrem Nkezabera, who was sentenced in absentia to 30 years’ imprisonment in December 2009. At that trial, the Assize Court had unanimously sentenced Nkezabera for war crimes, including murder and rape. It was the first time in Belgian judicial history that rape was considered a war crime.

    Butare man pleads ‘not guilty’ for crimes that include rape

    In March 2010, Ildephonse Nizeyimana again pleaded ‘not guilty’ to charges of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and rape. Nizeyimana was second-in-command of the Non-commissioned Officers School in the southern town of Butare at the time of the 1994 genocide. Allegedly, Nizeyimana permitted men under his command to rape Tutsi girls and women as part of a genocidal project.

    Gacaca sentences two men to life sentences for rape

    Gacaca sentences two men to life sentences for rape

    The Hirondelle News Agency reports that a semi-traditional court in Kigali sentenced on Monday two men found guilty of rape during the 1994 genocide to life in imprisonment in isolation. Martin Habimana and Vianney Habimana were tried by the gacaca court of Nyakabanda.

    Gacaca trials likely to continue until end of year

    Despite initial plans to wind up trials at the end of June, the Hirondelle News Agency reports gacaca trials in Rwanda will continue until the end of the year.

    June 16-18 2009: Colloquium on Sexual Violence as International Crime

    From 16 to 18 June 2009, an interdisciplinary colloquium focussing on innovations and challenges of empirical and other information gathering techniques to build evidence for the prosecution of cases of sexual violence was held in The Hague. The colloquium also launched the photo-exhibition “The Men Who Killed Me” by Samer Muscati in the lobby of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will remain until the 3rd of July.

    A Quebec court has found Désiré Munyaneza guilty of war crimes committed in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, the first conviction under a Canadian law that allows residents to be tried for crimes committed abroad.

    The Rwandan government has dismissed senior officials working for the Fund for Support of Genocide Survivors (FARG) for alleged misappropriation of millions of government funds targeted for survivors of the infamous 1994 genocide, local media has reported.
