“When Barack Obama was inaugurated as 44th President of the United States in January, a feeling of hope swept across the world. It wasn’t so much that he became the first black leader of the Western world, significant as this was and continues to be, but that his election heralded a new era of change.
The world is going through a period of intense transformation. The global economy is in freefall, traditional political ideologies are becoming skewed and societies are in a state of flux. The legacy of today’s uncertainty will be felt for decades to come.
Yet at the same time, old conflicts continue to rage. War in the Congo and in the Darfur region of Sudan persist without any hope of an end to the suffering of the millions of people caught up in the crossfire. The similarities between the war in Rwanda and the Congo are striking. A certain media fatigue appears to have crept in to the (lack of) reporting, which is why there’s a slight feeling of discomfiture in the fact that we’re reporting 15 years later on the genocide in Rwanda in which nearly a million people were killed when, in 1994, at the time of the atrocities, the world and its media virtually ignored the almost total erasure of a people and the plight of the suffering….
